Peugeot developed its first motorcycle in 1898 in time for the Paris Exhibition. The prototype, which had a small engine fixed to the rear wheel, was never commercially produced. In 1914, when they built the first 500cc bike Peugeot established itself as a main motorcycle manufacturer. Demand for a small, economical mode of transport spread through post-war Europe. This lead to the birth of the scooter in Italy. As its popularity quickly grew, Peugeot responded by launching the S55 in 1953 model. This was a 50cc scooter with a steel body and nifty luggage compartment at the front. Distinct from its Italian counterpart, the model proved to be a winner. Around 30,000 S55s were sold over the next seven years, mainly in France.
