How much is motorbike insurance for a 17 year old?

Motorbike insurance for a 17 year old isn’t something that anyone likes buying, and can seem like a massive drain on money. Sometimes, it can even cost more than your brand new motorbike! Unfortunately, it’s a legal requirement, and one of the few things we buy that we hope never to use. We cover all types of insurance from vintage scooter insurance to electric moped insurance.

Age can have a big impact on how much you pay for insurance. If you’re classed as a young driver (under25) you’ll pay more on the same vehicle than someone over 25 would. This might seem unfair, but young drivers are deemed a greater risk to insure due to their lack of experience on the road. After a few years, you’ll notice your premium decreasing, providing you don’t make any claims of course!

How much are premiums?

Is motorbike insurance cheaper than car insurance? Generally speaking it is. Insurance for a 17 year old will be cheaper than for a 16 year old, but will also depend on the power of the motorbike, and what you plan to use it for. If you’re riding a 50cc scooter, this will be cheaper to insure than either a 125cc scooter or motorcycle. Don’t let this put you off choosing the best motorbike though, as Scoot Scoot will help you to find the cheapest insurance.

Premiums are affected by dozens of rating factors, with age being one of the most important. Your premium will also be affected by where you live, the crime rate in your area, and sometimes even the colour of your motorbike. Expensive insurance is something that all young drivers deal with, so it’s worth getting on the road to build up experience as soon as you can. This will help to lower your premium in coming years.

What can I do to get cheaper insurance?

Most insurance providers won’t give you advice on how to lower your premium, as this will mean they won’t make as much money. But there are a few things you can do to get the cheapest insurance possible:

  • Take an advanced CBT. If you take advanced training, you will be seen as a better rider, and so will get a discount from insurers. This can make a massive difference when you’re young.
  • Work out your planned annual mileage. The lower this is, the cheaper your premium. This is because a vehicle that’s on the road less has a lower chance of crashing.
  • Where you store your motorcycle. Overnight storage is a big rating factor; so if you have access to off-road parking or a garage, tell your insurers. They will rate lower on this than if it’s kept on the road overnight.
  • Security devices. Things like security locks and anchors can make a massive difference to premiums. This isn’t the case for all insurers though, so make sure you check with them first.

It’s a sad fact that insurance is more for young riders, but it’s something everyone has dealt with. However, Scoot Scoot will compare the market for you to make sure you’re getting the best deal on your insurance.
