Vespa Insurance

As the owner of a Vespa scooter, you’re part of the Vespa story that goes all the way back to post-war Italy when there was a demand for a low-cost mode of transport to help mobilise the workforce. The Vespa, which went on sale for the first time in 1946 after being unveiled at the Milan Fair, soon became more than just a practical and economical means of getting about, especially when the revamped Vespa 98 Series 2 was produced a year later. From day one, Vespa had a style all of its own and by the time Hollywood stars Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck were filmed riding together on a Vespa in a scene in the 1952 movie, Roman Holiday, the brand was well and truly established as a fashion icon.

The wasp is born

The Vespa, or ‘wasp’ in Italian, evolved from a prototype built by Enrico Piaggio, originally called ‘Paperino’. Not satisfied with the finished product, Piaggio teamed up with aeronautical designer Corradino D’Ascanio who was previously involved in designing the Lambretta scooter. With a front wheel that resembled the nose wheel on an aeroplane and its distinctive leg shields at the front, D’Ascanio’s design was certainly unique. Rumour has it that when he saw the scooter for the first time, Piaggio said “sembra una vespa” ‐ it looks like a wasp! The rest, as they say, is history.

Vespa range

Today, Vespa is as popular and desirable as ever and appeals to all age groups. Reliable, technologically bang up to date, light and supremely comfortable to ride, the modern Vespa manages to look retro as well as cool and contemporary. The scooters are available in a choice of four standard engine sizes: 50cc, 125cc, 150cc, and 300cc, and in a range of styles. Owners often accessorise their Vespa further to create their own unique scooter. But whether you choose to add extra mirrors, a top box, or chrome rear rack to your Vespa, or simply ride it as is, you’ll want to make sure your scooter is fully insured. Buying a Vespa isn’t cheap and any repairs and replacement parts for such a prestigious brand are also likely to be expensive, so if you’re unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, or something happens to your scooter, you want to know you have the right kind of cover in place.

What type of Vespa insurance is right for you?

There are three main types of insurance to choose from and each one will vary in what they cover and incur a different annual rate. When it comes to Vespa insurance, however, it’s important not to simply opt for the cheapest policy but the one that gives you the level of protection you feel you need.

  • Third party insurance: the cheapest and most basic type of policy and the minimum level of insurance you must have to legally ride your scooter on UK roads. This policy covers you for any damages you cause a third party, including their vehicle and property, but not for your own losses, personal injury or damage to your scooter. If you’re involved in an accident, you’ll have to pay for your own repairs to your Vespa.
  • Third party fire and theft: with this type of policy you get the same cover as above but you’ll also be covered if your Vespa gets stolen or is damaged in a fire.
  • Fully comprehensive: an all-encompassing form of insurance that in addition to the two policies above, also covers you for any damages to your Vespa and any personal injuries sustained in a crash. Typically the most expensive type of insurance, a comprehensive policy is the one that gives you complete peace of mind. As with all policies, however, make sure you’re happy with the terms and conditions before going ahead.

Special offers to look out for

Because we work with many of the top UK providers, you may be able to take advantage of some special offers on Vespa insurance, such as a lower annual premium if you have a record of zero claims, if you only ride a relatively low or limited mileage a year, or if you’re aged 35 and over. No two riders are the same, of course, which is why it’s important to find the type of Vespa insurance policy that reflects your usage. Remember, the insurance quotes you are offered are based on the information you provide, so please make sure you fill in the online form carefully and always provide accurate and up to date information.
