The wasp is born

The Vespa, or ‘wasp’ in Italian, evolved from a prototype built by Enrico Piaggio, originally called ‘Paperino’. Not satisfied with the finished product, Piaggio teamed up with aeronautical designer Corradino D’Ascanio who was previously involved in designing the Lambretta scooter. With a front wheel that resembled the nose wheel on an aeroplane and its distinctive leg shields at the front, D’Ascanio’s design was certainly unique. Rumour has it that when he saw the scooter for the first time, Piaggio said “sembra una vespa”  it looks like a wasp! The rest, as they say, is history.

What type of Vespa insurance is right for you?

There are three main types of motorcycle insurance to choose from. Each one will vary in what they cover and incur different scooter insurance cost. When it comes to Vespa scooter insurance, however, it’s important not to simply opt for the cheapest policy but the one that gives you the level of protection you feel you need.

  • Third party insurance: the cheapest and most basic type of policy and the minimum level of motorbike insurance you must have to legally ride your scooter on UK roads. This policy covers you for any damages you cause to a third party, including their vehicle and property. This does but not for your own losses, personal injury or damage to your scooter. If you’re involved in an accident, you’ll have to pay for your own repairs to your Vespa.
  • Third party fire and theft: with this type of policy you get the same cover as above but you’ll also be covered if your Vespa gets stolen or is damaged in a fire.
  • Fully comprehensive: an all-encompassing form of bike insurance that in addition to the two policies above. Also covers you for any damages to your Vespa and any personal injuries sustained in a crash. Typically the most expensive type of motorcycle insurance, a comprehensive policy is the one that gives you complete peace of mind. As with all policies, however, make sure you’re happy with the terms and conditions before going ahead.
